There were no stars.

The sky was black and solid, tar-black.

She began to feel impatient.

It wasn't right of Cal to keep her waiting in this corner of the dark, empty lot.

It wasn't right.

She felt a drop of water on her forehead, cold and startling. Then a drop on her shoulder. It was beginning to rain again, a cold sprinkle.

Cal, where are you? Hurry, please.

She stopped when she heard the scraping sound. Where was it coming from?

"Cal — is that you? Cal? Are you here?"

The parking lot was so dark. Most of the other street lamps were out for some reason. Knocked out by the rain, maybe.

Someone groaned. Very nearby.

"Cal?"

She felt a sudden, cold tremor of fear avalanche down her spine.

Something moved. Something scraped. Someone groaned. Again.

"Cal? Please!"

Her heart seemed to stop. She had to force herself to breathe.
